  • Owwwwwwwww it hurts :-(

I know its normal to have various aches and pains in pregnancy and i've been pretty lucky up to now. Over the last few weeks i've been waking up with really achey hips but it's always tended to go after i've got up and moved around a bit.

But for the last week or so, i've been getting quite bad pain really low down on my back - like at the base of my spine (is it called the coccyx or something?). It's worse if i've been sitting for a long time but ince the pain starts, i can't seem to get rid of it. I think i overdid things abit yesterday when i had a bit of a cleaning frenzy at home and all last night and this morning, my hips have been really aching and still teh same pain at the base of my spine. Last night it was really hurting just to turn over in bed.

It's not that bad now that i can't move or anything but is still uncomfortable and sore to walk around IYSWIM. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it? Or do i just have to put up with it as another pregnancy irritation?

    Thanks.

Have a word with your midwife. I had hydrotherapy during pregnancy and it did wonders...well for at least the time I was in the pool anyway!

I just put up with it but if it had gotten much worse I'd have been onto my MW. Defo mention it to your midwife - she might send you to a physio. I found sleeping on the sofa more comfortable as my hips were in line with the gap in the cushions and it was better than having the hard matress pressing against them.

my advice is to really take it easy as much as posible, because it sounds like pelvic girdle pain...which I have as well..and it got so bad in my 2nd pregnancy I could barely move!

With my first pregnancy, I managed to jar my sacro-iliac joint whilst bending down to pack boxes (we were moving house) at 34 weeks.  Within 48 hours the pain had got so severe that I was bedridden.  I managed to get to a prebooked midwife appointment the next day (my husband drove me but they had to get a wheelchair to get me across the health centre car park) where they referred me straight to a physio.  The physio gave me lots of excercises, and support belt and a pair of crutches which I continued to need up until I gave birth at 42 weeks.

The area of pain sounds very similar - base of spine, right down to my buttocks.  I'm totally not wanting to scare you with my story as I know my case was rather extreme, but rather to reassure you how beneficial the physio referal was.  I literally went from being bedridden to, over time, being able to walk (very slowly) across a room without use of crutches, purely from perservering with exercises.  I would advise that you push for a physio referal and hopefully you will be able to prevent the situation getting any worse.

That whole pelvic area is so prone to problems during pregnancy, mainly because of the increase in the chemical relaxin in your body during this time.  It literally causes joints to relax and not hold together as firmly as they would normally, in order to prepare the body for what is needed during childbirth.

I hope you manage to get it sorted x
