Have to agree with Bookgirl - that is big difference in price. Remember babies can wear 3 or 4 outfits a day if there are poo or sick incidents - so you will need quite a few once you know whether its a boy or girl and their size and shape.

It's all personal choice isn't it Smile I don't want to seem rude either! It's just to me £10 for a babygro is reasonable when mixed in with a pile of £3 and £4 ones. And if it gets ruined it gets ruined, I'm not fussed, if I like something I buy it!

As for car window shades BG I do have them on the list but can't find any I like!! They must have doggies on but most have cats on instead! Any ideas?!?

I didn't get any newborn stuff as every baby on either side of the family was 8 lbs+, so I knew mine wouldn't be small.  both were around 9 lbs so newborn stuff wouldn't have fit,

I bought a lot of gowns which were great b/c they were easy, comfortable for baby, and weren't too big for the early days but lasted awhile

I agree that £10 is a lots to spend on one babygro ... When are you due Hepburn, it`s definitely worth waiting for the Easter sales as Next, M&P etc. slash most of their newborn range to half-price.

We had a couple of Next babygros & vests which we got in the sale for our May baby, it`s not that we can`t afford full-price, I just love a bargain & would much rather donate the remainder of what it would have cost to SANDS.   Watch out for Next`s newborn range though ... Some items are are for 7.5 lb, others are for up to 10lb but are all labelled newborn. Isaac was exactly 7.5lb & they fitted him perfectly.  H&M do lovely baby clothes too. I personally find most  M&P clothes a bit cheap looking tbh Embarrassed

What is a capsule wardrobe Confused  Not heard that term before!

Absolutely! It's definitely worth waiting for the sales if you don't need the stuff immediately as you'll probably find the stuff you like is reduced to at least half price. I don't think I've ever paid full price for an item of baby clothing and Toby has tons of stuff.

Toby was 8lb 9oz and was still in newborn stuff for a good month or so. We found though that he only ended up being in 0-3 clothes for about 2 weeks so unfortunately he hardly got any wear out of that size.

I think it's inevitable that they'll end up wearing stuff that's too big at some point as I've found with T that there'll be a time at which he's between sizes so it's either stuff that's too big or shoehorning him into stuff that doesn't fit.

Toby was 8lb 9? Good grief MM, you're not much more than that yourself. How did such a wee dot of a lady have such a huge baby?

Anyhoo, I digress. I don't see much point in buying small baby clothes unless you think/know you're going to have a smaller than average baby. Milly was 8lb 6 and wore newborn size for all of a week - just as well I only had 2 babygros in newborn! - then was in up-to-1-month for prob another 6 weeks. Anything in smaller baby size would have been a total waste. Also, babies clothes rarely fit "just right". To begin with they're big, then they fit for, oooh, about a week or so, then suddenly you realise they're too short on the leg, or the vests have gone a bit off-the-shoulder, so you move them up to the next size and suddenly they're swamped again.

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

I've not bought anything in newborn size or smaller for this one.  If the baby is anything like C, it won't be in them that long (and she was 7lb 14oz so not overly huge).  I'm thinking one going home outfit and that's that.

The Tesco tiny baby size was no good for her (BIL bought her a pack of vests from there).  It's easier to dress a newborn in clothes that are too big.

Thanks all, I do think I'll just get a selection in a few sizes of bits I like. I've no idea how big or small the baby might be so I'll get a selection. By capsule wardrobe I mean a couple of vests, couple of sleepsuits and couple of short sleeve bodysuits in each size. All in bright colours and individual pieces rather than just white. I do see the point about saving money where poss but I'm just not fussed about getting a bargain, if I see something I like I tend to get it. Like i said it's just me! I don't expect all to agree with me!!

I agree with you Hep - if I've seen something I like I buy it...doesn't matter if it's 50p or £10. Big Smile

I admire you ladies who can find real bargains but I'm not much of a keen shopper and I just buy what I like rather than scouring shops for bargains. I wish I was a bargain hunter but i'm not. My idea of hell is TK Maxx. Embarrassed All those rails and no organisation gives me the rage Laugh

Hepburn, thought that`s what you meant. I like bright colours too but confess to loving newborns in white.

I agree with everything that Jelly Bean said.

Liam was 7 5 and in newborn stuff for ages.  I got him some small baby and up to one month as well.

Just a few things to add

Re sizes - Ethan is the only baby I know who hasn't gone straight into 0-3 month clothes and bypassed everything in newborn.  My family never knew you could get prem clothes before he was born.  If you were unlucky enough to have a prem / teeny tiny baby you can get stuff pretty quickly (in that case are you going to buy prem nappies etc too?)

Clothes fitting - sorry, but that won't happen.  At the moment Ethan (8 months) fits BHS prem clothes right through to M&Co 12-18 months.  Unless you want to try on every item of clothing every day of their life, you will end up putting your baby in slightly baggy clothes.

Colours - if you want basics, I would always say get some white.  Bright vests are all well and good, but you spend all your time making sure you can't see the pattern through their clothes

Price - when it comes to cost, spend what ever you want, it's your money after all.  But please bear in mind that you will often bin clothes before you have even done the poppers up in the early days (poo really travels) - I often felt I may as well just stick the money in the nappy and use it as a liner for the amount we wasted.

Sorry but ROTFL at "capsule wardrobe" for a baby.  Have you got Suri on your list on baby names? Big Smile  (I've got to stop reading trashy mags at the hairdresser...)

Just to add, I really loved going round picking out bits and pieces for R once she was with me.  I appreciate it's not so easy for some to get out quickly after the birth, so you don't want to be unprepared.  But don't underestimate how much more fun it is picking up babygrows and holding them up for a 3 day old and saying "do you like this one, my darling baby?"
