I love the M&P stuff though Spamboule! And as it's so cute how can I resit Laugh

Plus this week M&P have offers on and I've found plain white items to be cheaper than Mothercare.

I sort of already answered this on your other thread before i saw this so copy and paste...

Are you expecting to have a small baby - it never occured to me what size/ weight A would be- we just bought a few newborn outfits which were for up to 9lbs and more 0-3 months stuff. He is now nearly 13lbs but has really only just outgrown the newborn stuff and there is still room to grow in the 0-3 months so i wouldn't buy many, if any, for a small baby unless you know its going to be small - they will always grow into bigger stuff.

I've basically bought sleepsuits, sleeveless vests and normal vests in both newborn and tiny baby sizes. I figured that way I'd be covering both bases and haven't made much of an outlay money wise.

Nearer the time I'll buy a pink and blue outfit for coming home and a few little bits that I can always take back if they don't fit.

Mummy to Edie born 5 weeks early on 16-06-2010 5lb110z.

oh and as Spam said supermarket stuff is great - A's most worn babygros are from sainsburys - they have the fold over sleeves which in my opinion are a must as he will stratch himself at night otherwise plus i'm always losing his gloves/ mittens. infact i've found the more expensive brands that we have been given as presents are the more impractical ones and therefore don't get worn so much.

Remember you will get given quite a few outfits as presents so don't go mad!

Not especially Goldfish but my best mate has just had a 7lb baby girl and the newborn things are mahoosive on her so they've had to go out and buy small baby things which fit much better.

Just made me think I should cover all bases.

I hate it when babies look like thier clothes are too big for them!

B was 8lb 7oz at birth but because he is so long, he was only in newborn for a week, and then we were into 0-3 month stuff. Now at 4 months some of his clothes are 6-9 months stuff, but he is still wearing some t shirts that are 0-3 months. Hmmmm he must just have long legs.

Also don't worry about buying too many clothes as people will give you a lot as presents. I would just get a couple of packs of babygros (mine were from Matalan and TK Maxx) plus hat/gloves/pramsuit.

My two sons were on the 95th percentile until they were 1 so seemed to grow out of their clothes faster than I could buy them in that first year. I know I had to take some of no2's presents back as he was 9lb1 and was far too big for them right from the start. Most of the early stuff they only seemed to wear once as they had so many lovely presents.

Baby no3 is going to wear all their old vests etc even though she is a girl. I'll buy a couple of things but expect to get plenty of lovely outfiits from our kind families - who are all very excited about a girl this time. Some people have said she might be a bit smaller being a girl but since the boys were 8lb9 and then 9lb1 I expect she may be getting close to 10lb when she is born!

Does your family have big babies? How tall are you and your OH? That should give you some idea of how big your babs will be.

M&P stuff is lovely but I'd rather save on small things and spend on bigger things - imagine a mustard yellow bm poo that won't come out of the beautiful M&P outfit you spent a tenner on which they wore once for half an hour - such a waste! Save it for when you know the sex at least. A stained 3 for a fiver asda babygro is much less painful on the purse, trust me! As to original question, Izzy was a fraction above 50th centile at 7lb 13oz and 50cm long, her first size babygros looked massive on her.

Problem is its not just down to weight - babies are all different shapes too - A is quite a chunky boy but one of the NCT babies is a skinny little thing and all her outfits still look big on her at 6 weeks.

I'd say just don't buy too much of any particular size.

oh and that is so true about the mustard poo - it really is that colour and stains like nothing i've ever known before - i swear its toxic!!

another one thumbs up for basic sleepsuits and vests, majority of ethans are asda or tesco and they're great. he has the odd junior j or rocha but i don't see the point, they're sleepsuits not going out stuff. they grow out them so quick it's not worth the money to buy fancy stuff, save that till they're a bit older, today ethan is in a £2 t-shirt from asda with jeans and he looks so gorg, yet he had on rocha stuff yest and didn't look anywhere near as gorg. mothercare, asda and tesco all do 2 piece pyjamas too if you want something different fom a sleepsuit, ethan had these for newborn:

one thing i couldn't have done without was this, infact i could as he wore it 3 or 4 times for all of 20 mins and grew out of it. but i got another sleepsuit from dunnes at £7 as again I spent £30 on the one below and just refused to spend it again for him to grow out of it so quick:

I think everyones advice would be the same, buy a few essential items in each size but buy a good outer suit to wear. I would say if you want to buy the more expensive things at first then same goes, buy a few wee things as I was the same with e, but after a few weeks get in lots of the non branded items as you go through them so quick.i didn't realise just how quick which is why I'm selling so much stuff now. It really was a waste.

I'll def buy a selection of sizes.

To be honest I'm not too fussed on where we buy from or the cost, and if it gets ruined so be it. We're just buying what we like in capsule amounts. If that means a £3 ASDA or a £10 M&P babygro gets ruined by toxic poo then I'm not fussed really.

I don't mean that to sound flippant, but the difference between a £3 babygro and a £10 isn't huge price wise IMO, so we're happy to buy what we like for baby and then go from there.

I'll get a few smaller baby sizes, a few newborn and a few in 0-3 and go from there.

    Thanks all Thanks

L has only just grown out of her NB stuff from Mothercare (She's 10 weeks). Whereas the stuff from Next she grew out of within weeks, and she was only 6lb 13oz at birth.

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

You really don't think £7 is a big price difference on a babygro??!

Seriously, without wishing to sound too flippant myself, if you can afford to do that, great. But I will say that we bought loads of white/cream/yellow before Izzy was born and once she was here, all the lovingly chosen, gorgeous neutrals were suddenly so boring - while I didn't want her just in pink, I wanted her in girl clothes - I think other hitchers have said the same in the past! If I was doing it again I'd really only buy enough for the first few days and then send someone out for colours!

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

Oh I'm not only buying neutrals BG! Most stuff is really bright, stripy and summery (I've found some fab purple stuff, it seems to be everywhere!). So not boring neutrals or yellows (I can't bear yellow!).

Plus I'm not buying much at all, just capsule items in various sizes (A couple of vests, babygros and sleepsuits in each size).

It's just that I'm buying those capsule items from wherever I see stuff I like so I've got a nice selection rather than boring neutral or white stuff. And in a mix of sizes (inc small baby thanks to this thread!).

Where I get it from and how much it costs isn't really a factor, just that I like each item and that I've got a good selection of sizes IYSWIM?

(And no, to me £10 on a babygro doesn't seem like much even if it's worn once or twice only seeing as I'd spend over £100 on a dress I'd wear once or twice or a fortune on shoes I can only wear once in a blue moon. But I appreciate that is probably just me and most would disagree! It's not like each baby outfit I am buying costs £10, it's just that if I like it and it happens to be £10 I'd still buy it)

Sorry, I didn't want to be rude - but I think a lot of us here are bargain hunters! Purple is fab for boys and girls. Oh, I remembered earlier, randomly - have you put car window shades on the epic list? We had a summer baby and it didn't occur to us at all!
