  • Do you buy second hand clothes for your children?

I've bought a couple of pairs of maternity jeans (SH) off e bay and they're great and I have no problems wearing them.   I then bought something for the baby - I wouldn't but it's something that I missed in the Christmas sales and was kicking myself for not buying.  It's come this morning and I'm a bit disappointed tbh.  It's in ok condition, it's been washed (although there are a couple of hairs on/it in) but, I don't know, I don't know if I want to use it.  Am I just being snobby?  As I say I don't mind the jeans I've got for myself but this seems different somehow.  Having said that OH's sister has given us a load of stuff and I won't hesitate to use that but then I know where it's come from?

We have lots and lots of second hand clothes which have come from friends so we know their origin, and I am also expecting some sleepsuits from a Hitcher too. I think so long as they are in good condition, and I would wash them again myself, then I have no problem with it as they go through so much and grow out of them so fast, it could cost an absolute fortune.

Ok, I'm probably just being too precious then.  It's just that it's the first thing I've ever bought for the baby. Not that that should make much difference.

At first i bought new new new all the time.  But after a while, L was only wearing a few things once or twice before she outgrew them (she was a quick grower!) I got a lot of things from my brother and my sister in law but I only kept the clothes that were in good condition and didn’t look too worn.

The first outfits she had were new, but now as some clothes can get quite stained I go to NCT nearly new sales and buy from there, but I only buy clothes in good condition with no stains or clothes that looked like they have been washed a couple of times.

For your first baby I think everyone is a bit funny about buying 2nd hand or using hand me downs, buy whatever you want and then make your own decision.  If it is not something you would wear in that condition, would you put it on your baby?  That’s how I look at things now xx

Yes I understand that. When we went through the clothes we'd been given, I did take out anything that looked very worn etc too.

Maybe when you have been and bought something new, maybe a coming home outfit etc, you will feel happier about it?

Im pregnant with no.3 and all the clothes ive got for this new baby so far have come from friends and ebay. I think it depends on the seller, person you get them from, theyre not all bad. In fact most are good for babies because they grow so fast that they dont get worn much. Ive just bought 4 bundles worth of stuff and only one bundle was "ok'ish" as alot of it was bobbly and looked old but as i won them all for 99p, theyre just gonna go in the bin Laugh I hate clothes that look worn so i know what you mean but in my opinion its a small percentage that look tatty.

I am a bit hypocritical in that I will buy from here and ebay but not from charity shops.  I have no idea why because logically it's no difference.

I have bought stuff from ebay that I am more than happy for her to wear, however there have been a couple of things that I've been disappointed with and therefore she hasn't worn them.

Apologies for lack of capital letters - Zoe has stolen my shift key Huh?

The only new clothes Ethan has are those bouht from others or in the sales.  I think the only time we got new was when he was first born and we had no prem clothes.  Most of his stuff is hardly worn to be honest, so I would assume that others is the same

Yes I do. eBay & charity, although thinking about it, I'm more of a sales person than second hand for the kids. I can't afford to be precious about the stuff my son wears holes in from rolling around in the garden or crawling around the house playing cars, I've thrown away many kneeless trousers!

I buy more second hand stuff for myself, and I think on eBay sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you're not - remember buying a snowsuit for DS when he was a newborn, it was sold as BNWOT, but when it came there was a sick stain on the inside Ick!

I've bought a few lovely bits from hitchers and a few ebay bits (especially if I'm getting a duplicate of something in a different size).

I also look at it that she will probably also be sick on everything and need more frequent changing that when indoors it doesnt matter if something isnt new. She happens to have been bought a lot of new but I love it that I've also been given bags of things from people that I wouldnt have found in the shops.

Yes have bought lots that way.

  • Re: Do you buy second hand clothes for your children?

Yes as long as it's in good condition plus i'm selling loads on ebay at the moment so i see no reason not to buy or sell second hand. I'm selling mainly because ethan has grown so quick, most of the things haven't been worn or worn once. I have bought from there myself and been disappointed when something isn't in as good condition as stated but that's the thing with buying on there.

I'd happily buy 2nd hand clothes and have done. The only time I was a bit put off was when some arrived reeking of cigarette smoke, but I just washed them a few times and the smell seemed to go. When they're small, they wear them for such a short amount of time anyway.
