Process of elimination really!
We wanted somewhere hot, tropical & beachy for the main part of the honeymoon & as we get married in October that ruled out Europe
Somewhere where we could get that real 'castaway' feel, we didn't want to stay in a chain like hotel or go somewhere too developed.
But then we like varied holidays too so that ruled out somewhere like the Maldives.
H2B wasn't keen on Asia.
We wanted a 'twin centre' type holiday with a stay in a city too but really didn't fancy South Africa which ruled out the Seychelles, Mauritius, Zanzibar.
I've been to Australia, New Zealand & Mexico wanted to go somewhere different.
I quite fancied Costa Rica but October is rainy season.
We did really fancy Hawaii but I felt it would be quite developed & we wouldn't get the 'castaway' feel ... so we thought about other islands in the South Pacific.
Out of those we know a couple of people who have been to Fiji & we ideally wanted to go somewhere fairly original, we couldn't afford French Polynesia (Bora Bora etc) and Samoa whilst not being that developed on the flip side didn't have the luxury honeymoon type accommodation either.
So we settled on the Cook Islands which offer the castaway beach effect but with some stuff going on on the islands so we shouldn't get bored, luxury honeymoon accommodation & flights via LA so we are having 3 nights in San Francisco on the way home.
So there you go! It will be quite a different holiday for us as we usually do city breaks or road trips but we are staying in 2 different islands (7 nights in one, 5 in the other) so it should be relaxed without getting boring. We've spent a fortune on it but we are seeing it as the biggest holiday we will have until we retire!
