What stuff do you like to do to relax? Are you a beach babe or do you love cities more? Are you active (watersports etc) or do you just want to chill? OH and I like nothing more than eating and drinking ! So we have chosen Italy as we figure there is LOADS of good food and wine there, and its kind of known for romance! x

Isnt it a song from the 80s?? That is totally in my head now....!

It was too expensive to go where I wanted so h2b got to choose and he wanted Thailand. We couldn't go anywhere too secluded because the World Cup is on and h2b couldn't be without his footy, even on honeymoon!!

What kind of holidays do you like, city breaks, relaxing beach holidays?  Now you can have a bit of both with twin centre holidays or your can book it all yourself.  My husband and I went for one week in miami and the second in Barbados a few years ago and it was fab.

We spent ages going round and round in circles trying to choose the perfect honeymoon destination and ended up deciding to go back to Barbados because we knew we loved it there!  We got engaged there.

Perhaps think about what would be your ideal break and how you imagine your perfect honeymoon to be - is it total relaxation or a bit of sightseeing/activity. Somewhere secluded or somewhere busy with lots of activities and nightlife? You can also look on the internet to see when the best time of year is to visit certain destinations to see how the weather/how busy it is around the planned time of your honeymoon. Also, does flight duration make any difference?  Are you happy to go on a long haul flight say over 8 or 9 hours or would you prefer a slightly shorter flight.

The first time we went to Miami and Barbados we booked it all ourselves online so no hol company involved.  For our honeymoon we used www.virginholidays.co.uk as they offer honeymoon perks like upgraded rooms, gifts in room, free excursions etc.  I believe quite a few holiday companies have honeymoon offers.

When I am searching for best prices I quite like to use www.travelsupermarket.com

I love www.tripadvisor.co.uk for honest reviews on destinations, hotels and for travellers' genuine photos, rather than brochure or website photos!

    Hope that helps! ParadiseTravel

hi steel goddess, as im in similar situation to you (leaving child at home) - i'll tell you how we decided...we thought of the place we most wanted to go that we wouldn't dream of taking our son to. so we started by ruling places out!

We kind of thought we can do a "normal" beach holiday anytime with children, we would both also like to go to the Maldives also but as we've only got a week  and it's rainy season there when we'd be going it kind of ruled that out - so we narrowed it down to either Las Vegas or Dubai.

We've both been to Las Vegas before (separately) so we have decided on Dubai. 5 star luxury and it is definitely somewhere i wouldn't take kids. can't wait!!!!!! xx

We still have a list of about 20 possibilities! Every time i read about other peoples honeymoons this list goes up! I'm just as useless as you.

  • Re: How did you choose your honeymoon?

    Ours was actually OH's idea.

Originally I fell in love with the idea of one of those water huts in the Maldives. So we did a bit of research and then felt that while it would be amazing, and perfect for me, OH would more than likely get a bit bored with that type of thing.

So then I suggested going all-out luxury in Italy, which is somewhere I've never been but would love to go. We looked into it and found some beautiful places but if you do all-out luxury in Italy, you're still going to spend a shed load of money, so we decided that maybe we could look into spending that money further afield (just felt that we could go to Italy any year really)

So then OH suggested a safari holiday as it's something he's always wanted to do. So we looked into Kenya and then just gradually fell in love with the idea after seeing different hotels and different trips we could take. So we approached a few companies we'd heard recommendations of, found a quote we were happy with and booked!

Not sure if that's much help to you!

  • Re: How did you choose your honeymoon?

We were toying with the idea of Barbados or Mauritius because it was the more 'expected' option but in the end we decided for what we'd want it was going to cost too much and the flights were longer than I liked.

In the end we sat and thought about what we really enjoyed about holidays and it's not being around other people (!!!) so we booked a totally secluded villa in Cyprus with it's own pool and private rocky beach for a week of utter relaxation! We are the type who love to bbq with a cold beer so cooking for ourselves will be fun rather than a chore and sitting out overlooking the sea with a coffee and croissant sounds bliss! :) We'll have the car if we do decide to go out exploring and there's a little taverna a minute's walk away if we fancy being waited on!

Have a think about what you want to do, when you want to go and how much you want to spend. Look at websites like thomas cook, first choice, Thomson etc. We are going to Turkey for 2 weeks in June, got a great bargain £700 each for 2 weeks all inclusive, hotel has great reveiews as well.

  • Re: How did you choose your honeymoon?

We had a 2 week all inclusive holiday booked to the Dominican republic before H2B proposed so it made sense to use it as our honeymoon. We've upgraded the flights and the room at the hotel.

  • Re: How did you choose your honeymoon?

    Process of elimination really!

We wanted somewhere hot, tropical & beachy for the main part of the honeymoon & as we get married in October that ruled out Europe

Somewhere where we could get that real 'castaway' feel, we didn't want to stay in a chain like hotel or go somewhere too developed.

But then we like varied holidays too so that ruled out somewhere like the Maldives.

    H2B wasn't keen on Asia.

We wanted a 'twin centre' type holiday with a stay in a city too but really didn't fancy South Africa which ruled out the Seychelles, Mauritius, Zanzibar.

I've been to Australia, New Zealand & Mexico wanted to go somewhere different.

I quite fancied Costa Rica but October is rainy season.

We did really fancy Hawaii but I felt it would be quite developed & we wouldn't get the 'castaway' feel ... so we thought about other islands in the South Pacific.

Out of those we know a couple of people who have been to Fiji & we ideally wanted to go somewhere fairly original, we couldn't afford French Polynesia (Bora Bora etc) and Samoa whilst not being that developed on the flip side didn't have the luxury honeymoon type accommodation either.

So we settled on the Cook Islands which offer the castaway beach effect but with some stuff going on on the islands so we shouldn't get bored, luxury honeymoon accommodation & flights via LA so we are having 3 nights in San Francisco on the way home.

So there you go! It will be quite a different holiday for us as we usually do city breaks or road trips but we are staying in 2 different islands (7 nights in one, 5 in the other) so it should be relaxed without getting boring. We've spent a fortune on it but we are seeing it as the biggest holiday we will have until we retire!

  • Re: How did you choose your honeymoon?

I wanted to go to the seychelles but it was too expensive so oh suggested the caribbean.  We wentt round travel agents and got a load of brochures, narrowed it down a bit and then googled the shortlist. went on all the websites and on trip advisor and picked the one we liked best and included the most!!
