it legal to do so, and I have done so, simply because now she is in the second stage car seat we just didn't really have another option (also don't drive, and this was to get to and from a wedding), obviously its not ideal, and depends how you feel about it but it is legal.

Sorry just wanted to add, I wasn't recommending anyone travel with child on lap, it is something I did without thinking about it, but I was trying to say iit was awful and scary and something I never plan on doing again, I will always look for ways to have t in a child seat in all future cab trips. Although will be avoiding cab trips altogether if I can help it.

    jelly baby:

Please don't put the seatbelt around yourself and your child.  If you do that and there is an impact not only will they have the impact force but also the force of you pushing them against the seatbelt.

I would ring ahead and see if there is taxi firm can provide a carseat.

WJBS about the seat belt.  What weight is she?  Would it be an option to get a cheap booster seat which would raise her up a bit for using the normal seat belt, obviously not ideal but much easier to take with you than a normal car seat.  For those travelling with older kids, this looks a fab idea http://www.boostapak.com/Booster_Seat_Rucksack.html
