  • So how clever/devious can a1 year old be in all seriousness? Help!

Gabriel has just turned 1. He is has been a dream baby in every department except food. He has allergies (milk fish and nuts) and has a very senstive gag reflex so as soon as he started solids he was throwing up most days.

I would say now in an average month with coughs he gets from nursery ( which means he is sick more often) he is sick 13/14 times a month. He started nursery in January only 2 mornings a week and he loves it or so i thought. He certainly does not cry when i leave him anymore

In the last 2 weeks he has thrown up on the way to nursery in the car seat. Luckily it is only the dairy equivalent formula he has to have but it still means  have to clean the car seat and the nursery staff change him as soon as he arrives. My husband took G last week on one of the days and he was not sick.

He is still facing backwards so i thought car sickness until he was not sick with my husband. It is not my manner of driving although my husband disagrees!

Can he really be doing this for attention? Has anyone had anything similar happen to them?

Tomorrow i amgoing to wrap him up in a towel and place him in the car so if he is sick there should nto be too much bother. I try not to be rattled by this as i am rather used to him being sick, but in the car on the way to nursery when i have to go to work is not amusing.

I am also going to try putting on a Disney CD to see if that distracts him rather than the radio i normally listen to.

Surely it cant be a psycological problem at his age?

    Help

    Thanks for reading ladies

not sure about that but i know when my son hadn't slept through a night, at about 9 months my HV told me it was a matter of willpower and to leave him to cry if i needed to - she said she knew babies that made themselves sick at that age. but she was talking about when they are crying in the night, does your son cry before he's sick or is he just sick?

he is 16 months now and sleeps through the night most nights but he still cries every time when i leave him at nursery - and he's been going for 5 months!

    Thanks for the reply

No crying and he is a great sleeper. He coughs himself into being sick and that is the norm but it is only been in the back of the car on the way into nursery for the last 2 weeks.

Hmmm... you're saying it's not uncommon for him to be sick on any day, and your H only took him one day last week - not enough evidence to say it's you not your H, certainly!

I don't believe at 1yo children can be deliberately manipulative, no. I'm sure he doesn't enjoy being sick, hungry and being stripped off either, poor love. However I do believe it's not too young to start forming involuntary/unconscious patterns, so the things you are thinking of doing sound good to me. Can you also try having the window open a crack on the other side of the car for some fresh air/new sounds? Distraction by playing 'spot the bus'?

To me it sounds more like an issue that is coincident with the mornings - for example after a night's sleep it's common for children to need to get any extra mucus up from their throats where it has sat all night, and therefore for a bottle to bounce. How soon before you leave in the car does he have the bottle? Can you assist with winding him? I know what you're saying re allergies and solids etc but is there a breakfast solid you could try to work down the mucus e.g. rice cake/toast?

Hugs to you, it sounds grim for you xxx

Thanks M hope you are well? Toast are you kidding lol, he is not great with toast. He has a bottle at 0630 and is in the car by 745 and has breakfast when he is there. The window is a great idea and the cold air will certinly distract him.

Sorry this is short but willbe back on tomorrow

Thanks for your kind message and big hugs to you and your family x

If you diistract him while he's coughing does he stop himself being sick? I'm with Madonna on the distraction thing - has he got something to play with in the car, something with flashing lights and buttons? Our LO has only a 4 min journey to nursery in the car but she definitely likes to have something to 'do'!
