    - Closeish to London, possibly a drive or train ride away

    - Preferably not self catering, maybe a hotel or something?

Not sure if its your H2B's kind of thing but how about a spa break in London or  a theatre break you can get them with meals etc included x

we still arent sure what we are doing for ours yet if at all! as we will probably have to take the boys as we dont have anyone who could have all 3 even just for a weekend or split them between friends/ family we then need to arrange it at a time when everyone is free, their dad is a total arse and wouldnt have them as it would be seen as doing me a favour, so it just seems easier to take them with us probably disneyland paris or something but even that works out at about £2000 for a three night stay!!

DOes it have to be UK? Have you considered getting on Eurostar and spending a couple of nights in Paris. You might be surprised that the price comparison, I reckon there might not be a lot in it. ALso do you shop at Tesco? You can swap your clubcard points for things like Eurostar tickets and hotel bookings.

Have a look at this website - you can get good rates for nice hotels - http://www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/

Also, along the lines Zippy mentioned - have a look a Brussels.  Soooo cheap for a weekend!  The last time we went (Jan 09) we got the Eurostar plus 2 nights in a 5* central hotel (Le Meridien Brussels) for a total of £226 for the 2 of us!

How about somewhere on the South Coast?  Brighton?

Or Dartmouth in Devon is lovely!  Lots to do.

Depending on budget - Carey's Manor, or Terravina near me in the New Forest are lovely!

I know it's perhaps a bit too far from London, but I've heard great things about this place: http://www.windermeresuites.co.uk/  It was where we were originally planning on going before we settled on our honeymoon in Ireland.

I second Terravina in the New Forest - tis pretty lush as far as I can tell: http://www.hotelterravina.co.uk/

Bath is a lovely short break too.  There are a ton of places you could stay that would be pretty special.  I read a review of this place that looked quite good: http://www.thequeensberry.co.uk/
