  • Average number of dummy re-plug-ins per night?

Just a pondering based on the fact that E seems to be needing her dummy more and more through the night Bawl and I've no idea what's 'normal'.

If your LO uses a dummy how many times do you have to put it back in through the night?

    Thanks Thanks

Maybe twice when she was really little.  Since she moved into a cot at 6 months it's been maybe once every three or four nights (She's 20 months now and it's probably once a week or less).  She has it on a dummy strap attached to the grobag so can usually find it herself.  The only times we have to get up is when she's wriggled so much it's fallen off.

B went through a phase of needing it back in dozens of times. But it was just a phase. HTH.

my cue to go cold turkey and throw out the dummies was when I found it was more of a sleep issue than a benefit.  this was at 8 months for C and 6 for L. it got to easily being about every 20 mins for a couple of nights and that was it we did away with it and actually had few problems from doing it.

Thank you for your replies ladies.

I know it is a piece of string question!

We've really only had 2 bad nights so will see how we go. It's been such a lifesaver for daytime naps, with 2, but I am concerned it could become a problem at night.

Anastacia- did you have to do CC when you got rid of them?

well we had to do CC with Charlotte but that was for other reasons. we tried to do constant reassurance/shh pat but she got more and more upset with that (she was standing up and walking around the cot by then which made it really difficult so we did CC with her because it seemed to be the only thing that worked for her (kind of her personality as well even as a 2 year old now, she likes to rant and scream about not getting her own way) whereas with Louisa we just stayed in there with her kissed her, lay her back down (she was cruising by then too) and pat her and she goes off quite happy. she is now 10 months and we generally go through to her once or twice a night when she wakes up to burp but she goes down okish (except when she wants to get up and play for 2 hours)

so CC isn't necessarily needed, any sleep training should work if it is the right one for your child.

yeah CC isn't anyone's favourite route i don't think but for some children it is possibly the only appropriate way for them.  i would definitely say as soon as the dummy is a hindrance rather than a benefit and is actually disturbing their sleep in itself then I would say it was a good time to get rid of it or if they are old enough try to teach them to put it back in themselves by leaving a few around the cot. personally I am really quite relieved we got rid of the dummies when we did as both children now settle without dummy/finger/thumb, anything really so for us it was a good time and otherwise I think you tend to have to keep it until they are old enough to understand why you are getting rid of it.

good luck with whatever you decide, just remember any change takes time for them to adjust to but they will do it (I threw the dummies in the bin to avoid temptation to go back on it but in reality it wasn't too hard)
