  • Random pondering - do different religions have different birth etiquettes?

I was just wondering if different religions have different birthing etiquettes ie the religion where the woman aren't permitted to show their faces to anyone other than their husband - how  do they manage when giving birth?   And I'm sure I read somewhere that there's one religion where you have to give birth in silence, as anything else distresses the baby.  It could have been scientolgy (sp?).

As I say just an idle pondering Laugh

    Hi,

There are so many different etiquettes when giving birth and even when the baby is still an infant.  It is true that Muslim women would not show their face when giving bith but only to male doctors, female doctors are fine.

I was asking my friend who is Chinesse this same question, for them not so much during labour but when the baby is born they 'bind' there legs so they grow straight.  When saying I had not even heard of this and I didn't think my links were all that bent I think she questioned then questions it to herself a little.

Also a different faith shave the hair from their babies, when born/ Christened but can\t remember why.

It is actually really interesting all the different views and ways of child birth/rearing.

    I am offically a geek i feel...

Hi Lucky Charms!  With the Muslim angle I was more thinking if they aren't allowed to show their faces to men, how do they show more 'intimate' parts when giving birth!  So they have to keep their face covered if a male doctor is there but there is no issue about showing anything from the neck down?

It is interesting the different customs etc.  A friend of mine is from Paris and she had never heard of water births at all!

There is an issue showing from the neck down...I was speaking to a paramedic here and said he answered a 999 call to a lady in labour (no female paramedic's here) and at first the Husband refused the paramedic to treat her.  It was not until the paramedic said either I do this or you could loose both mother and baby that the husband relented.  The mother stayed fully kitted out and the paramedic had to treat them looking as little at the business end as possible - thankfully all was ok but can be a 'minefield'!

I would have thought Paris would have gone for waterbirths!  I do think if I said waterbirth here they would think I had gone crazy!

Not really a religion thing , more of a cultural one but I'm sure it was Niger that women laboured in silence.  I vaguely remember reading a report about the country with the highest infant/mother mortality rates and they mentioned that they laboured in silence.  I have no idea how they manage it as i was far from silent!

Ready to be corrected if i'm completely wrong!

    All very interesting though.
