  • Holiday 3-4 weeks after birth. Good idea??

I have no.3 due on 26th July but knowing my luck i will go over and end up having it August. My in-laws have asked us to go on holiday with them in the first week of September, only in the UK but would you recommend going for a weeks holiday 3-4 weeks after birth, not just for the baby but for myself as well? My last 2 births were'nt very traumatic and i was out of hospital straight away but i cannot for the life of me remember how long it took before i started to feel some sort of normality physically. Would you go for it? xx

I think it's going to be hard to say and if I was in your position I would see if there was a way you can be added nearer the time rather than booking something now and not feeling up to it at the time. I guess if you were going to be having lots of support you might be ok, but what if things didnt go to plan and you ended up with a section for example, then you might not be wanting to get away so soon.

We went away when Izzy was about 12 weeks and that worked really well, before that I was getting BFing established and was all over the place so it would have been really hard to go away with other people as we didn't have any structure to what we did.

I'm going to Center Parcs at start of July, it was postponed from last July as my dad was very ill so they let us move it back to this year.  Baby is due on 26th May, so it is going to be only a few weeks old, but it has to fit in with the dates that H has his son for a week's holiday, which are set by a court order.  It's maybe not the way I'd have done it if I'd known it was so soon after baby's due date but I wasn't pregnant when we moved the date and since it's all sorted now I'm just going to go with the flow.  As my mum and sis are coming too, I'm quite comfortable that it'll be okay, planning to enlist their help where possible!

It is only a 3 hr drive from where we live mind you so not too far to travel.

    Hi SN Smile

I think you'd do best to see if you can get 'added on' last minute. I theory if you're on time then baby would be just over 5 weeks, but as little as 3 weeks ish if you go 2 weeks overdue.

If you had to have a c-section for this baby then you'd still be in recovery time so may struggle with a holiday what with all the orgnanising etc. Plus you just don't know how this baby will be in terms of routine and sleeping etc.

I'd not want to commit to anything yet really.

    HTH xx

I think you should go for it! It's your third baby after all - so it's not like you'll have any time to relax if you stay at home as you'll have the other two with you (I presume). You know what you're doing by the third baby and if your first two were straightforward births, you probably won't be in hospital for long, plus it's unlikely to be too late being a third one.

Thanks everyone, think im going to go ahead with it. Fingers crossed everything will be ok. Ill be with family and i wont be doing any of the driving so i see it as being a home from home really but with more help on tap. God forbid ill be 2 weeks over, ill be pleading for as many sweeps as possible if it gets near to that Laugh xx

    I would definately go.

We went away when L was 4 weeks old just as a family of 5 and it was fine, maybe not with quite thfreedom a normal holiday would bring but it was a get away non  the less and the other 2 loved it.

If you are going with family then they can at least help out with the other 2 and probably give you a much deserved rest even if its not sleep time it may still allow a little peace.

We took A to Texas, USA at 6 weeks old.  It was a 9 hour flight, with stop in Holland and it was fine.

It was great being away from home for the week because it meant no washing, ironing, walking dogs and minimum housework as we were in a hotel.

I would definately go for, especially when you have family with you on hand to help with the kids.

I think I'd go for it, with it being your 3rd home isn't going to be very relaxing anyway, at least you'll have family to take the older two off your hands.  We went away just the 4 of us when Lily was  weeks old and had a lovely few days, granted Abigail refused to sleep in her bed and ended up in Lilys travel cot, h was in her bed and Lily was in the double bed with me, but it worked we all got sleep!Laugh

we went to florida when our 1st baby was 6 weeks old. Easiest travelling with the kids we've ever done! We didn't book it until after he was born, but I'd had an emergency c-section and felt fine afterwards so we decided to go for it. You've got help, and plenty of experience given this is your 3rd, so enjoy yourself and let everyone pamper you!

3-4wks I don't think I'd have been able to - but I'd had a section thne infected wound and had a non sleeping baby! Saying tha,t we went away when he was about 6 weeks, only in the UK and it was fine. We actually enjoyed the break!

  • Re: Holiday 3-4 weeks after birth. Good idea??

Yes yes, definitely go. You'll  have your family on tap to help you out.

We went to the Lake District, which is about a 300 mile drive, when M was 5 weeks. Brilliant! Cake brought to me on demand, everyone did everything for me. I managed some sleep. Matilda slept the whole way there and back in the car.

Completely different to when we went back when she was 10 months and she screamed for 6 of the 9 hour journey. Damn traffic!
