  • Not eating - when to start worrying ?

Yesterday Zoe had diarrhoea (and horrendous nappy rash) which I put down to teething as she has her molars coming through.  She didn't sit down all day, presumably because of sore bum, and barely had any solids (a banana & half a slice of toast all day) but did have 4 x 8oz bottles of formula.

Today we've not had diarrhoea - thank god - and nappy rash is looking a bit better but she has refused all solids (except 5 Mini Cheddars - thanks Voldie).  She has also refused bottles - almost unknown for Zoe - so has literally had the mini cheddars and 12oz of formula all day.

    She's refusing water as well.

When do I start worrying about her not eating - she's 12 months btw.

E has had a couple of days when he has not eaten a thing, this always seems to coincide with teething though.

If she refuses milk and solids again for a whole day I would probably see the gp for reassurance if nothing else.

    Hope she is okay.

I think if today she's been happy and alert I wouldn't worry too much but see how she is in the morning.

Has she had any wet nappies today?

  • Re: Not eating - when to start worrying ?

She hasn't been herself.  She's been very cuddly, for want of a better description, so just sitting on my knee which she hardly ever does.  She did play for a bit - we were at soft play - but then just sat on my knee again whereas normally she would crawl all over the place.

We have had one dirty nappy, but now that I think about it her nappies haven't really been wet.

Wet nappies are always a good sign.

Have you tried her with any calpol in case she has any pain.

Would she try and eat something like a yoghurt that at least is a bit fluidy .

I think if she's no better tomorrow I'd go to the Out of Hours GP

I hope she feels better soon. Its rotten when they feel poorly especially when they are so young and can't tell you.

Oh yes, she's had calpol.  It doesn't seem to be making any difference.  Have also tried Calprofen too.   I've tried offering her all sorts of food but she just gets really stressed and pushes it all away.  It's most unlike her - she normally demolishes anything and everything she can get her hands on.

    Thanks for your help.

my only suggestion i dont' think would work because we resort to icecream not good for someone with dairy issues.

Eleanor will only eat smooth stuff when teething so does get throuhg quite a few custard pots or fruit pots.

the fruit purree organix pots might be worht a try./

If she's taking milk & water, I'd not worry at all.  It can take a while, a week or more for their systems to recover and if she's still got the D then the bug's still in her.  Stick to the Brat diet, keep it plain unti she asks for more

  • Re: Not eating - when to start worrying ?

Ice cream would be nice when teething wouldn't it, hadn't thought of that, but as you said perhaps not the best thing to give to her.  She seems to cope with some dairy but perhaps not the time to try something new.

She is taking milk but it was only 1.5 bottles and no water.   I just wish she could tell me what the matter is.

    Awww poor Zoe

Does she like jelly? J hates the stuff but if she likes it it's a sneaky way to up her fluids

What about toast with a bit of jam? Mum used to give us donuts when we'd been ill, her GP told her to and we weren't complaining!

There's always more mini cheddars... try the ham ones to up her proteinLaugh

Haven't ever tried her with jelly but anything that comes near her she's starts to cry and push it away.  Even her favourites - toast, petit filous, shepherd's pie, pizza ... I've put it all in front of her.  The biggest shock was her pushing away the bottle. !

have you been able to look in her mouth? The only reason I ask is my youngest has had ulcers before and he was refusing all food/drinks.

I think if she's not taking on fluids / having  normal wet nappies for 48 hours I'd get her seen, if only because she may get dehydrated. I wouldn't worry about her not eating though, it can take them quite a long time to pick up from these things, it's the fluid that's really important.

    Hope she's better soon x

I had a mind once, now I have small children.

  • Re: Not eating - when to start worrying ?

She's still off her food and bottles, although seems to be quite happy playing etc.

She has only eaten half her normal portion of baby porridge, 10 blueberries and 3 spoonfuls of a baby jar thing.  She's turned down everything else - even banana which is her absolute most favourite thing.

She has had one 8oz bottle all day and refused her bed time bottle.

I am thinking a GP appointment on Monday might be called for.  Maybe it's because the HV said her weight had gone from 25th to between 50th & 75th for weight so she's put herself on a diet.  Slightly flippant trying to joke about it.
