  • Exercise after a C-section...

So I want to start doing some exercise - was thinking of starting off with some yoga and swimming....

I had a c-section (which became infected and exploded etc etc) and is still a little weep in places...... havent had a check at the docs yet (cos its xmas, doc on hol etc etc). So are there any guidelines etc or things I can / cant do? WOuld swimming / yoga be ok?

My next issue is getting my mum to look after baby while I go swimming (not to mention the fact that I hate leaving baby.....)

I think I'd be waiting until it was completely healed before going swimming. I wasn't feeling totally back to normal until 12 weeks after my section. My midwife said that it would take a while as my circulation system had enlarged so much with carrying twins that I'd be breathless really easily. She was right. I went for a walk with the Kleeksters 4 weeks after the section and kept on asking when we'd be there in the style of a small child as I  was so tired and breathless. How they put up with me and invited me to join the gang I'll never really know!

We did start swimming lessons with the boys when they were about 10 weeks old. BUt I am ashamed to say I haven't been swimming for myself as yet. I just don't seem to have the time, but maybe in the New Year I need to make time.

Personally I wouldn't be doing anything until the wound was properly healed.  Until around 9 months post surgery pushing the pram to and from town (40 mins each way at leisurely pace) would leave me aching around my scar area the next day.

I think you probably need to get guidance from a professional on this one - you have had major abdominal surgery.

Recovery does also depend a lot on the type of c-section you had - I was told that because mine was a crash section they took no care over how they cut me and that was why my recovery took a lot longer than the average.

Apologies for lack of capital letters - Zoe has stolen my shift key Huh?

I am 4 weeks post section and like you it has gotten infected and very sore!

MW and physio have told me that it would be at least 12 weeks before I can do anything more strenuous than brisk walking (I was asking when I could kickbox again!). I don't think you should be trying anything that would stretch your muscles - like someone else said, you are recovering from major abdominal surgey.

May be worth a trip to the GP and see what they say?

I had a section, and felt OK to exercise at 6 weeks after my check. However, I didn't have an infection or anything, so that is bound to delay recovery somewhat. I was able to go out running and felt fine, but everyone is different in how they recover.

    Good luck
