I've been expressing some BM and started a stash in the freezer.  When is the best time to try a bottle of EBM?  Morning, afternoon or night? I'm presuming it'd be best for my H to give it so she doesn't smell me/my milk and want the real thing!  How much should we start with (Poppy's 7 weeks on Saturday)?  Would starting with an 1oz and then me finished her off with a BM be ok until we work out how much she takes from a bottle?   To ensure that Poppy will take a bottle of EBM in the future when needed should we give or a bottle or so of EBM each week?  If so, how often?

Matthew was 7 weeks when he had his first bottle of EBM. I just gave him about 2oz just to see if he'd take it. I didn't want H to be with him on his own, with me out, the 1st time we tried in case he wouldn't take it. He drained the bottle no problem!

Now we just give one to him when I go out, so he can go for 2 weeks at a time without a bottle, and it doesn't affect him, he doesn't care how milk gets in his stomac as long as it does! Laugh He is 4 and a half months now.

Louise was a lot trickier, she never really liked the bottle, and I had to leave the house or she wouldn't take it.

We had trouble giving E a bottle and my HV advised that Mr_cdl should do it at the time of day she was happiest. That way there's less stress if she doesn't take to it straight away. Try 1oz at a time, EBM's so precious that you don't want to waste it if she won't have it.

Thanks for the replies.  Poppy is mostly happy all the time, just a bit of fussiness in the evening and when she is tired so will pick a time when there is time for H to have some peace to do feed her calmly - easier said than done with a toddler in the house too!

I'm not sure how she'll take to a bottle - I've tried a dummy with the idea of using it occassionally when I need to buy some time when I am seeing to Jack and she needs a feed at the same time, but she can't suck it in and it pops out of her mouth!  I just want to make sure that should I want/need to leave her I can knowing that she will take a bottle.

Another question - if she is given a bottle of EBM, I'm assuming I will need to express the feed I've not given her?  Or is it only if I feel uncomfortably full after missing giving a feed?
