  • OT - how much are you paying for your turkey?

    Hi,

For the first time EVER I am cooking christmas dinner for the whole family.

I need to order a turkey - my Mum usually orders hers from M&S but looking in their food ordering brochure they can be as much as £50 for one that feeds 7-10 people. I have no clue whether thats a good price or not but it seems steep to me!

Whats the going rate for a turkey these days? How much are you paying for yours?

    Thank you

We usually get a Turkey crown because we dont use the other bits and it's a lot of meat. It's usually for 6-7 of us plus tons for sandwiches (and I mean tons, we dont usually use the guides as we tend to think they're a bit stingy). We've often got ours from Tesco usually on 23rd and it costs around £25-30.

    Hi Casa

I havent bought a turkey before for that many people but I know that M&S will be quite pricey but their food is lovely. Could you get your turkey for Tesco and get the rest of your bits from Marks? Or last year my mil bought the beef for the main and the scallops for the starter and H and I provided everything else.

H and I are going out for dinner this year I am so looking forward to getting my dinner made for me.

    Hi,

I think that sounds abouit right. I went to order one from the butcher yesterday and for one to feed 6 they suggested a 6kg one for £48. We opted for a 4kg one in the end, and that is costing about £35.

    HTH,

sounds about right to me.  A bird from our butchers to feed 8 - 10 was about £70.

We have ordered a 10lb bronze free range one from a local farm. (to feed 6) They charge £3.85 per pound. We had one from the same place last year it was the nicest turkey I've ever had and there was loads left. xx

We have ordered from m&s,  for 6 people its probably going to be around £35-£40.  The nice thing about the m&s one is you don't have to do anything to it at all,  it comes in a tray already so you just take it out the box and bung it in the oven!

I went to 2 local butchers, both said I needed about 4kg to feed 8 people, which was about the smallest turkey they did.  One charged £12.75 per kg, the other £10.25 so I'm paying about £50 for 8 people.

Thanks all - its funny that the M&S ones that are supposed to feed 7-10 people only weigh 2.3kg! That is a tukey crown though so I guess that is all meat and no bone.

    Hi,

We got ours today as Tesco are doing a half price offer on the frozen turkey from their Finest range.  So got 5.6kg for £20 and it says feeds 6-8 but I think it will probably do more like 8-10.

I think fresh are more expensive.

I've ordered from Waitrose, it's a Bronze Feathered Free Range and will be somewhere between 4.3kg and 6.3kg and will be a max of £57 depending on weight of the actual bird.

That should feed 8 but there are only 4 of us so hopefully we'll have loads leftover! Big Smile
