Is there such a thing? I know some, but after what I thought was a very normal, non wind-inducing meal last night of fish and potates, Att was yet again writhing and grunting, and not sleeping for most of last night, I wondered if there was a "list" of what gives you wind, and passes through to milk.

For the 3rd night in a row he woke at about 11pm, and wasn't asleep until 3 or 4am...Sleep

That topped with J having a bug of some kind, has made our household a very sleepy place to be...

I'm only popping on and off, so if I don't reply straight away sorry...x TIA

Generally it faffects then when they're teenytiny, and tends to be things that would give you wind as an adult (so beans, caulflower, sometimes onions etc)  I found take away curry affected G, but home made was fine Weep

The only things to consider restricting are alcohol, and possibly caffeine.  Everything else is fair game (drugs, smoking excepted)

Could something else be causing the wind?  Are you winding thoroughy throughout the day?  Little bubbles can build up over the day to lead to uncomfortable night times.  Slllinging helps by keeping them upright and the heat & pressure of your body encourages wind out.

I'm not 100% sure but I read something in BW book yesterday that food you eat doesn't cause wind - the only thing that causes wind is taking in air when feeding? Like I say though I'm not positive!

    can you try infacol? x

WEES really, wind is horrible though. We used to give R fennel tea and used it from about 3 months on (syringed in to mouth after a feed, and then in with bottles when we switched) It helped amazingly and we've only just stopped using it and R is now 2!

Hope you find a solution and get some well deserved sleep.

    Gem x

    THank you all.

LF - I seem to spend half my day winding him! I'm rather obsessed with it, as I hope it helps at night time. We're also using infacol now, have been for a week or so. I'm not sure if its made that much difference to be honest. I'm taking him to a cranial osteopath in a weeks time...

I've had him in the sling a bit, but only so much as I had a section and it pulls...also means that i can't do a lot with my toddler with Att in the sling. Will keep trying it though!

    Thank you all x

Sorry - meant to say thank you Mrs S, you reminded me about fennel tea - I drank it when i was feeding J, and would give it to him direct from about 2 or 3 months as you have done, so I will go and get some tomorrow! x

My LO suffered with bad wind when he was little - I was advised to try raising his mattress at one end - this worked for me and helped him sleep.

Alsorts of things gave him wind via my milk - even things I was drinking!

Infacol was also great for helping him get his wind up before bed.

  • Re: List of what not to eat when BFing?

I had a very windy baby for the first 6 weeks due to me eating onions and not realising that he couldn't deal with them, cue me spending hours trying to wind him in the middle of the night. Even now at 16 weeks he can't deal with them as I did a tester night and was up every 2 hours!

Don't forget that Infacol has an acculative affect so won't start working straight away. Perhaps if you write a food diary you can possibly see if it is something in your diet. I found that it tended to be 24-36 hours after that he had trapped wind.

I wouldn't recommend curry no matter how old they are, I learned the hard way Ick!

seems anything that makes you suffer from wind is likely to do the same for bubs

Thanks again - Em he sleeps in a hammock so is slightly raised, but we try to keep him raised after a feed as much as we can, however not great when the middle of the night!

I don't eat a lot of onions, but I suppose I do eat some... do I cut them out completely?? A friend suggested tomatoes...has anyone heard of that??

I think it may have been the curry (no matter how mild) that did its worst a few nights ago!

i think perhaps a food diary might be the way to go...

    Thank you x

Check out kellymom too. In theory there's no scientific basis for BM being affected by what you eat, but anecdotally there is.

L is a windy baby and I suspect it's broccoli. Also in theory if you're going to avoid a food to check whether it's that which triggers the baby's tummy upset, then you need to abstain for up to 3 weeks as that's apparently how long some foods can affect you for! (I read up on this a bit last night as we had a mare with L screaming, windy and not sleeping much).

With T I noticed that every time I had a fizzy drink he seemed particularly bad - I rarely have them so the effect was very noticeable. After a fizzy lemonade one time, and some Cava another time, his wind was awful.

Also, I used to drink quite a lot of water before the last feed thinking that it would up my supply and fill him up. In fact I think it meant I had a lot of foremilk, which he was gulping - more wind and more uncomfortable nights. When I stopped things got a lot better, but I have to trust that he is getting enough at 7pm as I don't have that 'full' feeling at all now.

For me orange juice and grapes have given both my BF'd babies wind so I avoid or limit consumption.  I also read on kellymom that there is no evidence of what Mum eating passing onto babies but I'm sure it can affect young babies.
