Hi Fiona,
I usually send my clients these guidelines when they ask for help writing thank you cards.
Handwrite each thank you as it is much more personal
If a gift was given mention it specifically and let the giver know how much it is appreciated / or has been used already.
If someone travelled a long distance to attend the wedding it is nice to mention this in your thank you. Tell them that you appreciate the extra effort they made to attend your wedding.
If you were sent a gift but the giver could not attend the wedding, add a note saying that you missed them on the day/wished they could have been there. You could also say you’d be happy to introduce your new husband/wife at the earliest opportunity.
If your professional photographs are available to view/purchase online include details of how to do this.
Depending on your guests you could divide them in to small groups and have a template for each and just personalise the relevant bits of information. For example:
Guests who travelled a long distance.
‘Thank you for sharing our special day with us. We really appreciate the extra effort you made to attend our wedding and hope you had a safe journey back to ___.
We’d also like to thank you for your gift of _____. It has already proved to be a very useful item to own and will be handy to have in the house.’
Guests who could not attend but gave a gift.
‘We would like to thank you for the contribution you made towards our honeymoon. It really was the trip of a lifetime.
We are sorry that you were unable to attend the wedding in person but if you would like to have a look through our professional pictures of the day they can be found online at www.______.co.uk.
___ and I are hoping to be in ___ for a few days in next month and it would be lovely to catch up with you and share our memories of the day. I’ll make sure to get in touch once we have definite dates.’
I hope that helps.
Susan.
