  • Indie band versus cheese...? Help!

    Hi everyone,

I've been having a huge dilemma about wedding bands (and my search for the perfect band started in July...).  I thought I'd found the perfect band, but they play quite a lot of rocky/indie tracks rather than the usual cheese.  While that's totally my kind of music and their repertoire list matches my iPod playlist, I know that I won't be able to get people dancing all night as I have to be circulating etc., so I'm worried that without a spot of cheese, the dancefloor will be empty and I'll have wasted a ton of money.  The band do play a few classics like Summer of 69 and Mustang Sally, but their style is much more Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters, Blondie and Rolling Stones.  But then whenever I find a cheese band I just can't bear them because it's so not my kind of music.  What to do?!?!  Help!

    Tricky tricky...

Difficult to balance having what YOU want, with having the atmosphere you want.  Do you have friends who will get other people up on the dance floor even if the music isn't their style?

We're having  a ceilidh followed by an hour of cheesy music we've specifically chosen. H2B has put his foot down at 'Like a Virgin'. I can't see anything wrong with that myself ;-)

Ah yes, I forgot to say, we're definitely kicking off with a ceilidh.

The only loons I know who will dance to anything are me and H2B....

my H2B sister had a cool band for her wedding, it played all the indie/rock music, me and H2B were dancing all nite and loved it!

We had a similar dilema, i am a rock chick, H2B is an indie kid! In the end we went for a band that does a combination of a few 60s classics (Beatles, Rolling stones etc) to keep the oldies happy, then they will do a more rocky / indie set for us to appreciate and finish with more party songs such as summer of 69, a bit of queen etc.

In between sets we are going for ipod cheese!

It will either be something for everyone, or just wont gel, but the more people drink, the more open they after to dancing to anything!

I would go with what you want, and maybe put a few bottles of plonk on the tables to get everyone so merry they won't mind what they dance to!

I say go for what you want - most bands will play a mixture of music and if they are used to playing weddings they will know that there are mixed age groups and will know what tracks work well.

Thanks everyone for your help.  It really reassured me!  I spent an age going through the songs that I didn't recognise on the band's list using Spotify and realised that they probably have a broader repertoire than I'd realised.  There are a few oldies to keep the Aged Ones happy.

So, after four and half months of deliberating, I've finally booked a band.  Hooray!  That's one thing down and about a zillion still to go.... Eek
