We are really struggling to choose a girl's name and the one name that H and I both love is Georgiana? But I have a few reservations about it and think it would help to hear people's thoughts if no-one minds sharing? I hope I don't offend anyone but my reservations are:

    1) It's too posh/pretentious - I think it is originally a more upper class name and I am nowhere near that! Does this matter? Am I being a reverse snob? Will people think I am trying to be something I am not by choosing it?

    2) I am unclear of the true pronounciation - I would say George-ee-anna but it can also be pronounced George-ay-nah - and wouldn't want people to think I was silly for using the first way of saying it. How would you say it if you saw it written down?

    3) Would people call her Georgina all the time instead (although could get round this by spelling it Georgianna rather than Georgiana I suppose)?

hmm, think that's about it. Our son's name is Samuel and I think it goes ok with that, plus I would love to use Georgie as a nickname.

What do people think? Probably that I am completely over-thinking this! Laugh

    I like it

    1) I don't think its too posh - but who cares what people think?

    2) The true pronunciation is George-ay-nah.  I would automatically pronounce it that way.

    3) Could you use Georgina instead which is a gorgeous name?  I'm not a fan of made up spellings

    Georgina goes well with Samuel

I went to school with one (and we're talking posh school not beating-up-in-the-playground type school) and she was so embarassed by it she insisted on being called Georgina or George. So everyone called her this, teachers and friends, and it was only when I saw her name on some official record that I realised. By then we were good enough friends that just a bit of teasing ensued. She also insisted that her (terribly posh) mother call her Georgina - she refused to call her George!

Edited to add, I do like Georgina - T might have been Georgina if he had been a girl. I just think Georgiana is hard to carry off these days, posh or not.

  • Re: What do you think of the name Georgiana?

I like it but I've only ever heard it pronounced as Georgi-arna or Georg-ayna. I've never heard it pronounced as Georgi-anna.

I don't think you should care what other people think of the name if you like it.

I would pronounce it George-ee-ah-na (sort of rhymes with banana). I haven't heard it pronounced any other way. I would expect George-ee- anna to have two 'n's.

I suspect a lot of people would assume it's Georgina, but they can be corrected. Chances are people will shorten to George or Georgie anyway, especially if you do.

    Sorry short reply- juggling baby!

Who cares what people think. If you love it, go for it.

I like it. I love George for a boy & we've discussed having Georgie for a little girl, but probably Georgina.

I'd pronounce it George - aynah or Georgie - ar - na

Yes, I think it's posh but not exclusively so.

Personally I prefer Georgia to the other female versions of George.

Apologies for lack of capital letters - Zoe has stolen my shift key Huh?

Thanks for the replies, mixed views it seems! I quite like Georgina and Georgia but not as much as Georgiana.

I Love it, was one of my favourites but couldn't convince H.

  • Re: What do you think of the name Georgiana?

Oo I love it, dont think Ive heard of it before. I would pronounce it George-ee-anna (I think the same as you).

I did at first read it as Georgina which is a name I have always loved.

Georgie is a very cute shortening too

If you like it, go for it!
