I love Monty and like Dominic.

Wow you have similar taste in names to me - I don't want anything that's in the Top 100 baby names! I think Inigo is lovely but H vetoed it too! I also had Dominic on my list, and:

    Ivo

    Francis

    Archibald

    Clement

    Chad

    Barnaby

    Theodore

We both liked Franics, Theodore and Benedict but we both have agreed on Benedict and I was hoping it wouldn't become too popular, what with being the Pope's name lol, but you may use it.... :)

I'm not keen on Guy, but love all your other names.

A was very nearly a Benedict, & also very nearly a Dominic.

One of my friends has a 2 year-old Marcus and he's the cutest thing ever

We have an Alexander (& you're right, there are loads...!) - have you considered Hugo, Arlo, Jago, Leo (yes, I like "o" names!), Barnaby, Lysander, Percival, Arthur, Vincent?

what about something posh but not uberposh - Nicholas, Phillip, Richard etc?

There's a Guy and my son's schol and his bro is Piers and sis is Arabella.

Dav's friend Monty is just Monty - no long version.

I'm not keen on Benedict. I know he's not going to be the next John Paul (ie every 3rd RC boy in the country Laugh) but sadly, it makes me think of the Pope. Sorry. Embarrassed

I do love Monty, Dominic and Julian though. Gorgeous names.

Benedict - I'd presume you were a very faithful Catholic (the only Benedict I've met was very religious and what with now being the Pope etc - if you are/don't mind fair enough Laugh)

Julius/Julian/Marcus - bit of a thing for Roman emperors? Marcus best out of those but if you don't like Mark I'd steer clear...

Guy, Giles, Dominic - I know men named them all and seem good names, on the posher end of the spectrum perhaps?

Montague/Montgomery - I love the name Monty but think Montague is more of a surname and Montgomery is a bit of a mouthful (and also a surname, although this wouldn't put me of if I liked them) - I know a little boy called Montylal who is shortened to Monty and I love that name (it's Indian).

Thanks all. I am so non-Catholic that the pop hadn't even occurred to me! Both that and Dominic are pretty religious. Nicholas is also a contender, but again too many round here. Leo's a possibility, but I'm not sure about it as a given name and Leonardo's out. Philip is Alex's middle name (also my brother and H's dad's name) so out. Reuben is a possibility. Next door neighbour is Milo. I love Digby, H says 'dog', likewise Hugo and Rufus. Felix is 'cat'.

It's probably be a girl and then we'll have a whole new challenge! H doesn't object to my girls' names as much (except anything that has been turned into a brand name, so Flora, Stella etc are banned)!

I like Benedict and Dominic from your list.  My friend's LO is Dominic and he is a real sweetie

My H has scuppered all my favourite girl names so am now trying to convince my self that I can love one of the names he has left on the list! We don't know what we are having either

Montgomery (Monty) and Benedict were two of the three on our shortlist.  Still really like them too.

I am a Catholic so do want to use a Saint's name. We haven't chosen Benedict because of the Pope, but do like the short name Ben and the meaning of Benedict which is "blessed" which seems very appropriate after a miscarriage and then two years trying before getting another BFP!

  • Re: Thoughts on these names please

TBH not keen on any of them bu if I had to pick on it would be dominic. My fav boys name is Sebastian but it sounds odd with our surname unfortunately!!

Benedict is nice although it will probably get shortened to Ben.  I love Julius.  Montague is ok but reminds me of cats for some reason.  Marcus, Guy, Giles are not bad but not my cup of tea personally.  Don't like the name Dominic but only because I know someone with that name who is a nightmare!

Names I really liked were Sebastian (although seems to be getting a lot of outings at the mo) and Tristan (but a real mouth full with our surname unfortunately).

    Because I can...

Benedict: my twin nephews are Benedict and Dominic. Lovely names, both of them. I do especially love Benedict, though

Julius/Julian: I like Julius, shortened to Jules. Not keen on Julian, though

Marcus (not keen on Mark though so may be out! Love Marcus though): OH, but not fabby

Montague/Montgomery (not too keen on either tbh but love Monty as a shortened form): Really don't like this one, sorry

Guy: OK, but reminds me of a right nobber I went to Uni with

    Giles :a bit "meh"

    Dominic: see Benedict!
