  • boys words at 18 months?

    Hello

I know this is sort of a how long is a piece of string question but just wondering how many words your 18 month olds have?

I'm getting a bit anxious about little M as he doesn't have more than 6 words (if that as he rarely uses any words!) and by this age big M was full on talking - can they honestly be that different?

yes they can be that different!

Some babies don't start talking for ages.  All normal, please don't get worried.

Claire-de-Lune has some experience of this, I am sure she will reply.

D is 17 months and has no words at all. He babbles all the time but doesn't actually say anything.

  • Re: boys words at 18 months?

I think what worries my a little is that at 1 he had a 2 or 3 but he seems to choose not to talk now and just screams tiull he gets what he wants :(

  • Re: boys words at 18 months?

D is 14 months and so far has:

'ot (hot) for cups of tea/coffee and hot taps

hi-ya (I think nursery taught him this) when playing with his toy phone

Dog (all animals at the moment)

    Mama/Mummy (both)

    Dada/Daddy (both)

    Teddy

    mooooooooo (cow)

    boooon (balloon)

Think that is about it for words used in the right context although he jibber jabbers ALL the time.

on top of this he has a number of gestures - will shake head for no and nod for yes (and sometimes say Yep as the same time), blows kisses and will give proper kisses on demand, waves bye bye etc

    At 14 months we have:

Uppy daidy = oops a daisy!

    bye

car (also for cat and that!)

    ooh

    uh oh

All sounds really rather than words so wouldn't worry

They are all different.  Ben had about 50 at 19 months, the only reason I remember was because I typed them all out for my Mum as she had him for three nights when we went away.  ( I was obviously bored at work)

  • Re: boys words at 18 months?

Yes, they can be that different...  I remember Finn having a conversation about an "acoustic guitar" at 20 months  (I remember because he was chatting to the midwife when Cal was a few days old Laugh)

Callan had a maximum of ten words at the same age, and has only recently started talking in full sentences (he's 2 and a half)

I know he understands everything though Laugh

Thanks guys - it does help to hear other people's experiences! I'll bear with my prehistoric man and hope we get some more words soon :)

T is 19 months on the 13th, he can say, dadda (his favourite!) Cat, car car, stuck, there, grand dad, yogurt, ketchup, garden, and very occasionly mama, but that is about it, and it is very hit and miss whether he actualy uses them or not, he tends to point and pull us to what he wants, but in the last week he has started trying to copy my words more, and is babbling more as well, I would really try not too worry too much they all work at their own pace.

    T - feb 08.

    C - feb 10.

I remember B only having about 10 words for ages, then all of a sudden he was learning a new one every day, and now at 22 months will copy anything he likes the sound of and is starting to put two words together.  Something definitely clicked for him between 18 and 20 months.

I remember writing a down a list of over 20 words which T had at 17months. P didn't have half so many at the same age. Don't worry, it all levels out in the end Hug

WEES. They are all so different. Its not just a boy/girl thing either.

Elijah was an early talker - recognisable words at about 10 months; 20-25 words by a year, 2-3 word sentences by 18m and full, complicated sentences by 2.

Sebastian is 15m and has no real words other than hiya, mama and dada. He makes a handful of other 'word-like sounds'; like 'u' for up, 'ba' for ball etc; but alot of them get lost in his general babble.

They all develop at different rates; and they also have different stregths and weaknesses. For example, Sebastian is alot more physically adept than Elijah - crawled earlier and much more competently, climbs everything and has excellent fine motor control.

I certainly wouldn't worry about speech until they were over 2, unless they struggle with comprehension, or are completely non-verbal. Hug

This is quite reassuring. Alex is 20 months and has (variants of!): cat, Oz (our cat), all done, yogurt, hiya, bye bye, go out, again, hot, orange, yes, no, that. Possibly dada but not mama.
