Toilet training questions

  • Toilet training questions

After much gentle suggestion and a sticker chart, Rosie is using the loo most of the time as of yesterday and was even dry overnight which I was surprised about. I haven't read any potty training books, so don't know if we're doing the right thing, although obviously there are probably several ways to toilet train.

Thus far we keep her in her nappy and she announces she's off to the loo or takes herself off there unprompted. I'm thinking ofkeeping her nappy on for the next couple of days just to make sure she keeps on being dry (grandma's house is mostly carpets) then thought a day at home with pants might be good. Today and tomorrow we have appointments and so pants when out might just be a bit tricky.

The stickers are a big hit and we said if she gets enough we'll get her a trike, as she's just showing an interest in pedalling one and all we have for her are ride on no pedal ones.

Will this whole reward system mean though that we need to provide stickers and a larger reward for a while  - how long did you do sticker/reward charts for?

Does this sound like I'm on the right track re what I'm doing re nappies first til she's been dry for a few days, then pants?

    Any suggestions welcome.

I think it's quite unusual to wait for fully dry days before ditching the nappies. Most people wait for willingness to use the potty/toilet, then ditch the nappies & prepare for a few days of accidents while the child gets used to the new way of doing things. Jamie had never had a dry day before we ditched nappies (he just decided one weekend that he was using the toilet now), but he had very few accidents in pants. Having said that, if you feel it's working for you, why change it.

Re the rewards, I had a sticker chart for Alec which we kept going for a couple of week. Jamie just needed chocolate button bribery to get him to poo & that lasted for about a week, so no long terms rewards here.

Whatever works for you all I think.  We seem to be potty training without meanign to.  G spent Friday Nakit and just started using the potty spontaneously, and since then we've just being going big on the praise and carrying on.  We're introducing pants now

    How're you doing anyway?

We're three weeks in and we're only just going down to one lot of chocolate buttons for the day today - wish me luck!

The best advice I got after a false start was ditch the nappies for good. It was only when Tabitha spent a whole day wetting herself 'I'm SOAKING, Mummy [wail]" that she properly got the concept at last. We'd had lots of poos and wees on the potty but she just didn't totally grasp the fact it was an all the time thing,

one utterly rank day - I put lots of bin bags down on anything soft like carpets/sofas and covered with sheets and kept potty in the same room as her. 4 days later and she was only having the odd accident.

We are in no way dry overnight - although her naps are now dry - it's v common to wet overnight til much much later - 4 or even 5.

I'd say grasp the nettle and ditch the nappies - it worked for us - that is what I was doing wrong before I think when I tried her last year. They need to feel what it's like to wet themselves properly - I tried all kinds of things like a wrap over her pants and it still didn't click until we just went straight to pants.

Thanks all. Hmm maybe I should bite the bullet and do big girl pants then. Am just worried as we have a playdate this afternoon and birthday party to go to tomorrow afternoon so didn't want to be dealing with accidents at someone else's house, plus dealing with Lucy who seems to be feeding 1.5 hourly round the clock at the moment....maybe I'll compromise and do pants at home and nappies for outings til we're both confident she can manage ok.

Hi Lady F. How are you?

Am doing ok but it is pretty exhausting as we're still (big big sigh) at MIL's. Our house will finally be done is 6 weeks but til then it is a challenge to say the least. At least we have a live-in carer for MIL to take the weight off me looking after her. L is fine and v plump and loves feeding and co-sleeping. Have given up on stretchy sling as it doesn't distribute her weight as well now and either use my mai tai or our shiny new P&T.
