  • Febrile convultions.. any experience?

Louis has had a high temp since Monday.. it was touching 40 degrees and dropping with meds and then shotting back up again.  I took him to the docs yesterday and they said it was probably viral and to carry on with calpol/nurofen.  10 minutes after leaving the docs I took him into M&S to get a few bits... I looked at him and thought his colour had gone a bit, then when I tried to talk to him his stare was fixated and I could see he was losing conciousness.  I called out for the security guard who came running over... by which time Louis eyes had rolled, his lips were blue and he was stiff.. i wasn't even sure if he was breathing. The guy called an ambulance which was there is minutes... when they arrived he was coming round but still very pale.  Took him to the hospital and they said it was febrile convultions.. but i've been looking it up and it seems that this would be a proper fit with shaking which he didn't have.  He literally seemed to faint... is this even possible in a baby (well 17 months?)  or could you have the convultion without the shaking?

I've never been so scared in my life.. they've told me he could be prone to this whenever his temp gets high.. does anyone elses children suffer and if so is it everytime they get high temps?

    Thanks

    Hug

The only experience i have had of these is with children i have taught in Reception, I have had several children who did have ferbrile convultions and each time presented slightly differently. But all were when they had a temp and all came round in seconds. I made sure they were safe (no sharp corners etc) and if possible removed clothing to cool them down, opened windows and stayed outwardly calm (but quite a different story inside)

From memory all children seemed to grow out of this by the age of 5.

hope this is a one off experience for you. xx

I used to have them as a child and Finn had one when he was just under a year... He didnt shake, his eyes rolled and he lost conciousness for a while. He hasnt had one since but were really hot on acting quickly when he gets a temp. Clothes off, neurofen and / or calpol.... windows open if the room is hot. I think its to do with the hypothalmus being under developed, so they cannot control their temp, the reason it stops is because the hypothalmus develops.

I had loads when I was little but my mum has said she used to wrap me in a blanket (lack of education at the time I think), which would have made me hotter and encouraged the convulsion.

I was terrified for ages about F having another, but he's 2 now and weve managed to control it thus far. fingers crossed x
