What age do they start school?

I've been confuddling myself as to what age children are when they start school.

J will be 3 in June this year, and will start at a local pre-school (his free government funded place) 5 afternoons a week in September-time. He'll be 4 in June 2009, does this mean he will start school (as in 5 days a week 9-3ish) in September 2009, or will he carry on with the pre-school place, turn 5 in June 2010 and start at school in Spetember 2010 when he is 5 years 3 months old??

If you lived in Leicestershire he would start in January 2010. That is because we have 2 intakes a year here. If you live somewhere that only has one he would start in September 2009

Well Emily was 3 in November which would put them in the same school year. She is due to start school full-time in Sept 2009. It depends on your area though because some schools only have an intake in September, others have 2 or 3 intakes, so it's possible he might start in January or after Easter depending on how it's organised.

I was talking to one of the mum's at pre-school the other day. Harry is a November baby (4 this year) and our area only does one intake so, in Harry's case he'll start September 2009. A friend's son is 4 in August so he'll start this September.

As I understand it if your LO is just 4 when they start school you can opt for a half-day session until the term they reach 5. As Harry will be nearly 5 when he starts full-time anyway he'll do a full day then.

Our area only has one intake a year. Alec was 3 in December & starts in Reception in Sept 09 when he'll be 4 yrs 8 mths.

We only have 1 intake a year here as well. K is 4 this October and starts school in Sept 09 when he'll be nearly 5.
