Cake - three tiers and festooned with intricate sugar decoration. Our theme was sort of harvest-festival, so there were a lot of wheat-heads everywhere. I thought it was quite plain and non-fasionable at the time Laugh

I used to be gutted that I was never a bridesmaid, but reading some of these stories makes me think I got off lightly!

My auntie and uncle got married 1990, we were peach striped puff sleeved bridesmaids (7, 10) made by my mum, upside down french plaits with flowers stuck in (we looked like my little ponies). We got off lightly my uncles sister was in full peachy spectacular puffy sleeved with frills (she was 18ish).

Bride was full on charlene from neighbours, big sleeves, lots of lace and crystals Oh and the matching perm!

Here you go. 1991. 4 roses on the bum matching the ones on the arms and 3 gathered layers down the back from the roses to the floor. Pattern was originally for a wedding dress with a train but was modified to be a debutante ball dress. I don't think I have a picture of the back. I thought I had a pic of the pink taffeta bridesmaid's dress I wore in 1988 but I don't. I might be able to find one on FB though.

Hair was braided to the nape of the neck and then curled like the ringlets at the front.

I was a bm in 1991 for my cousin's gargantuanly ott Jewish wedding at the Dorchester for 500 of their closest freinds.

No pics on line but it was an autumn wedding and the bm's were in a v dark raspberry taffeta and thickish white tights!  It was a balerina length skirt with a rouched corset jacket.  The shoes were handmade by Emma Hope in the same fabric.  Hair worn very curly and loose but for some gypsophelia in the hair.  Ick.

The bride's dress had just about every adornment belched at it as you can imagine.  Silk taffeta with lace and broderie anglaise + diamante and pearl beading + ribbons edging the puff sleeves, and bows on the caught up hem lines, and acres of fabric on a train that was 10 minutes late for the service!!!

Band was the bootleg beatles (or similar beatles cover band)

Flowers were by Ken Whatsit - turner? And were basically gargantuan blackberry bushes and every other flower you can imagine in these *** off arrangements that were the size of 6 phone boxes.

Not sure if THAT's the sort of wedding you had in mind though!!!!!!!!

    Ha, not dissimilar actually...

Don't suppose you can remember what they had for the wedding breakfast?

    Love this thread Laugh

Jess, it might be a good idea to call a couple of the posher London hotels and ask if they have archive material - menus, images etc they'd let you see.

I got married in 85 the first time so a bit earlier than you are asking for, but we had baked alaska for dessert, had a balloon arch and my dress was satin and taffeta with the most enormous hooped underskirt.

The funniest thing about that wedding was the fact that I was too young to buy my own drinks. :(

I was a bridesmaid at my brother's wedding in 1989. I had long permed curly hair that looked sort of like Julia Roberts but not really. The bride wore a cream coloured dress with long sleeves and lots of beading up the front of the bodice. She had a trailing style bouquet of flowers. Her colours were red and cream. The bridesmaids all wore dresses with slightly puffed sleeves in a satin type material with a round shaped neck line and a dropped waist dress. We all had flower garlands in our hair. She had lots of red roses and I think we did in our flowers too.

The men got off lightly as they all had morning dress.

I can't remember how the reception was decorated although it was in a local hotel and there was an 80s style conservatory so it was probably pretty typical for the time.

The bride made the bridesmaid dresses herself except for the one that her cousin had said she'd make for her. Instead she got a dressmaker to run it up for her but the measurements weren't right. The bride spent the night before the wedding altering this dress so that her cousin could actually get it done up - although I don't think she could breathe in it.

What with all the red roses and stuff the whole thing must have cost her parents a fortune. The bride and groom didn't have any money and I had thought there could have been better ways to use that kind of money. Especially when they got divorced about 6 years later.

hmmmmm - let me see.... well it would've been a kosher thing so it would've been fish most likely. Salmon i'd be willing to bet.  Honestly can't remember though.  Maaaassive cake as well of course.

The only thing I can remember of wedding breakfasts at the time was that the cold buffet centrepiece was always a whole salmon, with cucumber scales.  It was the law.  No cold salmon = no wedding.

I was a bridesmaid in the mid 80's sporting a girls sailor outfit and straw hat. Mum said I could have my hair curled for the occasion, I'm thinking ringletts, hairdresser is thinking huge boufanted Afro. How stupid did that look with the straw hat purched on top.

oooh just remembered another, only seen pics of this but my FIL's sister's wedding party consisted of her two neices in lemon yellow polyester satin dresses that looked a bit (and I use that term very loosely) like Belle's dress in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, one small nephew in a dicky bow and then Poor Mr P in smart trousers and a leather jacket. No idea what the bride wore but I would place a bet she looked a bit like a baked alaska.
