  • 7/7 bombings

Were MI5 or MI6 aware of an attack just before?

I was just clearing out a suitcase & it had the luggage tag on from 6th July 2005 - We flew out from Gatwick to Dubai that day & i've never experienced so many armed police within the departure lounge. Before boarding we had to have a sniffer dog go around our cabin bags, but put this down to that an American Airlines flight was sharing the same departure gate & that what was done post 9/11 as routine.

IIRC we were at heightened alert status then and also the G8 summit was due to take place the next day (albeit in Gleneagles) so security was high everywhere.

That said, I think it was reported that they were aware something was brewing but didn't have enough concrete evidence of what or when.

  • Re: 7/7 bombings

I don't think there is any evidence that the security services were aware of any specific impending event - plenty of conspiracy theory, but flat denial from the police.

That two of the bombers were under observation (for an unrelated reason) is known, however I think the extra armed police you saw was down to co-incidence / a general increase in response to perceived terror threats.

It's something I've wondered, as we fly that route a few times each year, but have never had police presence to such a large scale.

  • Re: 7/7 bombings

I think it was just down to the G8 being on at the time.

There was a heightened police presence pretty much everywhere, but especially in town centres/ transport hubs. As I lived near gleneagles at the time I just assumed it was in case the anarchist/ anti-g8 protestors kicked off.

I actually watched a programme over the weekend about the conspiracy theories relating to 7/7 - they were all proved to be a load of rubbish.

Also remember it was the Olympic Games announcement on the 6th July 05 so there might well have been heightened security for that too.

I'd rather not go into it on a public forum. Not that it's very juicy, I'm just paranoid.

My mum was cutting through the Gleneagles estate with the Ramblers (with the permission of Gleneagles) in the days running up to the summit when a couple of black cars with blacked out windows came rolling up and men in suits poured out and started demanding their names and addresses. People started complying... until it got to Mum who drew herself up to her full 5' 2" and said "Young man, I am not going to give you my name and address. I have no idea who you are or what your intentions are. For all I know you'll be straight round my house to burgle it, knowing that I'm away walking. Show me your ID and I'll consider telling you who I am".  It amuses me greatly to think my mum is possibly on some MI5 watch list now. ROTFL

I was due to be at an event with Prince Charles at Excel and there was no additional security there.....

After the bombs went off, he cancelled the visit.(Or rather his security advisers did)

Not forgetting of course that the loon who used to be in the RAF (flyover girl?  Can't remember the name) claimed that her mum had met a friendly Arab who warned her not to get on the tube Laugh.

Carrot - no need to be paranoid, the police and security services are aware of dozens of plots at any given time.  Only a few come to fruition and only a few get as far as a point where there is tangible evidence to bring a prosecution.  I have no doubt that they were aware something was up, just nothing specific enough to do anything about it.

But didn't she pick up his wallet when he dropped it, in order to earn the warning?
