  • nursing bra - does this sound right to you?!

    Hi all,

I went to Bravissimo today to get measured for a nursing bra.  I go there all the time and love their stuff and never have a problem.  Pre-pregnancy I was in a 30E/F, the biggest I've worn in pregnancy is a 32FF.

The woman measured me up (although they don't use tape measures) and found one that fit on the tightest fitting, with a little give in the cups.  I trusted her opinion on this, and didn't ask the size (I have boob issues and prefer not to know straight off!).  Just before paying, I saw the label - 36DD.

It seemed to fit fine, but surely I should be looking at something smaller in the back and bigger in the cup?

(As it happens, there's a chance my milk might never come in, so I'm going to keep the labels on until I know anyway ...  but would like to know your opinions regardless!)

I would have thought the same as you in that you'd want the give in the cup rather than the back, however it could be that it was a small fitting make so might be the equivalent of a 34 in another make/style which wouldn't seem that bad.

My back size has gone up massively in pregnancy because my ribs have really expanded, I've gone from the same as you, a 30E/F to 34F and could probably do with a 36 now.  Maybe you've grown more since you last got measured?

As long as it's comfortable and got the space in it you need I don't think I'd worry too much though.

I would've thought the same too, your boobs get bigger when the milk comes in therefore you'd need a bigger cup size?!

It might be worth popping along to M&S or somewhere else that does fittings and see what they say.

I had a similar issue with debenhams last weekend.  I have been wearing a 38d and they tried to sell me a 38d.  I am normally (non preg) a 34/36 C.  I questioned about the cup and they seemed not to know what they were talking about even though I has specifially asked for a feeding/nursing bra.  Anyway I opted for the next cup size up an E.  I then went to M&S to be measured and she said I needed a 38E to start of with.  The general rule of thumb is that you need two cups up and the same measure abound the back. I don't quite fill the D at the moment so I guess that's why she suggested the E.

Last time with DD I went to an F - but then I was carrying a lot more weight myself - this time I am a lot leaner.  As you say I would keep the tags in and see how you go.  Remember your milk wont come in properly for a good 2-3 days anyway.  I remember wearing my nursing bras the first couple of days and thought they were HUGE and then all of a sudden they fit.

I also went to Bravissimo to get measured, and they were rubbish. (For a maternity bra, not nursing.) She just asked me what size I normally wear and then just got me one in the next size up. I questioned whether I would have room to grow into it and she just kind of muttered. I am bursting out of it already.

I am back off to Rigby and Peller!

I agree with you, I would have thought you will need a bigger cup.

I would personally trust their judgement. I went last week and found them to be excellent. My cup has some give in it for when my milk comes in, if yours feels the same this should be ok.

I'm fairly sure it was Bravissimo who said that different makes of bras are different sizes for each measurement, which is why they don't measure you.

There's a customer service telephone line, why don't you give them a call to chat through it. I've always been very impressed with them.
