Health & Safety gone mad

I went to a concert last night. Went to buy two bottles of water from the stand just inside the venue. The guy took off the tops and passed the bottles over to me. I asked for the tops, I was buying a bottle on purpose so that I could close it and not spill it. Guy said no. I asked why, he answered "health and safety" What? He said it was in case we threw them at someone and injured them.

I don't think much damage could be done with a plastic water bottle top can you? They didn't search me on the way in, I could have had a brick or anything in my bag

5 mins after we were inside we saw a cleaner walking by with a mop and bucket. And later on, just to the right of me there was a huge puddle on the floor. I would say that was more of a H&S issue.

You can do alot more damage with a full heavy bottle than an empty one.

I personally would blame the twats that throw things at gigs rather than H&S people.

But they were selling mugs and things, surely that would make a better missile?

I imagine people would rather throw a £1 water bottle than break/lose a mug with a photo of a Girl Aloud that they've just paid over the odds for.

500ml of water (or worse) in a sealed bottle weighs half a kilo, it's nice and easy to chuck too.

True. I just find it hard to get my head round these things ha ha. I think if you are going to cause damage you will find a way!

The concessions stands often aren't run by the venue and I suspect mugs wouldn't be on sale for the more hardcore events.  It's probably a blanket policy about how they serve drinks at the venue.  Plus people are sentimental buggers, they don't tend to chuck commemeratvie items, or things that they deem of value.

I get your point that there are other things that could be used, and you could take anything in with you, but it's a balancing act.  People don't need bottle tops, it's very easy to get the bar staff to remove the lids =  end of a huge source of ammuntion for the spur-of-the-moment numpty.

I'd bet my bum they have tighter door checks for other performances.

i know, i agree, it begars belief sometimes.  i went to a festival to see my little brother's band, and i was 8.5 months pg, and was taken to the cleaners by the door staff for having a fold up camping chair.  In the end they conceded that a heavily pg woman with no where to sit (it was muddy) was more likely to result in legal action than my desire to wing the camping chair at my brother's band.  Common sense 1, safety nazi's nil. 

I was however relived of my own drinking water bottle, so that i had to buy £4 bottles (complete with lids) inside instead.

I have also just hjad to rebuild the door that leads from the garage into the house, because it didn't have the requisit 5cm lip at floor level. 

The reason is, IN CASE i decide to gas myself in my car (we don't even keep the car in the garage), the fumes could enter the utility room (and what - make the linen smell??).  So I now have a 5cm daily trip hazzard instead.

The other reason is that a full bottle of water, sealed, rolling around the floor could be a major trip hazard. I went to the O2 on crutches to sit in level 4 (up by the roof) and also queried this as my friend had to carry both our opened drinks due to my crutches. When we got to our seats and saw how steep the stairs were and how high the drop was to the floor we could see their logic!

I think a mug would be a lovely weapon, in that you can get a good swing with that handle and don't need to even let go of your girls aloud mug.

Quite often the mugs are not for sale until after the performance.

We went to a gig at Old Trafford last year. Bought water and weren't allowed the tops however they were selling glass bottles of wine (regular size) and people were allowed to take these wherever they wanted.
