Got both blood test results today

Glucose tolerance test was "normal" (fasting reading 4.7, 2nd reading 6.8)

Progestreone result was "low" (3) so no ovulation

This is kind of worse case scenario for me, as it means my bodies not working,
but I won't get any help any time soon either.

Those of you on Metaformin, especially if prescribed by your GP-If you had normal GTT results, how
did you convince them to still prescribe Metaformin for PCOS?

JACK: Not for nothing, Jen. But it's only since you've been seeing a psychologist that I'm starting to think you may be in fact crazy. JEN: You wanna go to New York, Jack? JACK: Yes. JEN: Then shut up and watch the fish.

Oh, Sweetersong, sorry to hear this.  I can't help with the metaformin question, but I will send you a virtual hug Hug

    Hi,

Sorry the results were not what you wanted but on the bright side, it is better for your health if you are not insulin resistant. I am on met but have never had a GTT I did loads of reading around the subject went prepared to my GP to have to fight for it but my GP sat with me and discussed the pros and cons and he was happy I researched and we agreed on a trial, however the met did what it was supposed to do and made me less hungry etc. so I have remained on it.  As for the progesterone hopefully once you have had a cycle or two without the implant hopefully everything will setlle down and you will ovulate. I highly recommend acupuncture to help with this though.

    Hi Sweetersong,

I had normal GTT results but was put on Metformin, not by my GP but by the consultant at the hospital who I saw regarding the PCOS.  Sorry to ask questions but have you had PCOS confirmed? I had several scans done which confirmed cysts on my left ovary, plus had the normal symptoms associated with the syndrome.

I agree with RJ, you should do a bit of research about metformin and then go and discuss it with your GP. If you have a half decent GP, they should be willing to look at the pros and cons with you-metformin is not expensive (which for certain GPs seems to be number one priority, unfortunately). If you`re not happy with your GP, you can change them (but difficult, I know, when you`re in the process of having treatment/seeing specialists etc). good luck with it.

    Thankyou all

nina-Yes I had pcos confirmed in sep 2006

RJ&donna-thankyou for the advice, I will read up and print things off prior to my appointment next Thursday

I am hoping that perhapps my implant is still effecting things, but it is annoying when I have ready that almost everyone has their cycles return straight away.

    Hi Sweetersong,

I have PCOS and am on metformin. I had to go to a gynaecologist to get diagnosed with PCOS but once I had the diagnosis, he wrote to my GP confirming that metformin was his prescribed treatment. What is your GP suggesting that they treat you with instead? If it's nothing then I would go back to the GP with some research on metformin as already suggested and push a bit further. If the GP still doesn't offer metformin then ask what alternatives can be offered and stress how not offering any treatment is not an acceptable outcome for you. It's not easy, I know.

Try and be patient as not everyone's cycles return straight away (mine certainly haven't!)

Hi S - just wanted to send you a Hug and say sorry your results are so rubbishSad  Really hope that things come together soon and you can get all the help you need. xxx

    Because I can...

    Thanks petal

TB-Yea the GP said before there wasn't anything they could prescribe (this was 2 years ago now) and only consultant could

I have all the other symtomns of PCOS rather than just PCO (excess hair, having to cut down on refinded carbs due to weight issues etc) so am concerned that even though my GTT resultants are normal now, if I go on producing excess insulin, I may become resistant to it eventually

Worth asking GP again though as time has moved on and it is now recommended treatment.

    Good luck

  • Re: DTCers-blood test results are in

Yes, will do, armed with the info

Does anyone have any good websites that show it is reccomended, the only thing I could find on NICE is that they reccomend it for those who don't respond to clomid?

It is worth just explaining to your GP why you want metformin even for just a trial all the pros are here in one article which not only comes up on a google search but was given to me by an endo friend of mine explains the basics well.
