Gifts can often be tricky to purchase unless a couple has sent out a wedding list of items they want.

After all, with so many people already living together before they tie the knot, they are probably well stocked up on crockery, cutlery and other odds and ends.

Rebecca Black, etiquette specialist at Etiquette Now in Davis, California, says that handmade presents can be the ideal solution as it is the thought, not the cost of the wedding gift that counts.

"It's quite appropriate and means a lot more, you remember it - and you don't tend to remember that beautiful vase that got broken," she explained to the Associated Press.

Guests with a passion for sewing could make a special wedding quilt while a family heirloom that will bring back memories of the big event could also be a good idea.

Women could give the bride a crafty present they made during her hen celebrations, as the Guardian recently reported that instead of a drunken night out, many ladies are attending art or creative classes before their big day.

Civil partnerships 'still popular' in the UK

The number of gay couples making a wedding speech is likely to remain steady in 2010, it has been claimed.

Gino Meriano, gay rights campaigner for same-sex families and founder of the Gay Wedding Show, pointed out that according to many reports, there has been a 46 per cent decline in the number of civil partnerships.

However, he described this as "complete baloney" and said that in fact, there was an influx of ceremonies taking place in 2007 and 2008.

Mr Meriano continued that in his opinion, there are likely to be between 800 and 1,000 people sending out wedding invitations and holding same-sex marriages every month in the UK.

"That would be your standard number that you would expect because it's a niche market," he added.

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into effect on December 5th 2005 and was the first time that same-sex couples aged 16 or over could obtain a legal recognition of their union.

Brides swapping hen nights 'for crafty activities'

Many brides could have more money to spend on their wedding flowers and decorations this year, as they are reportedly cutting back on their hen nights.

According to the Guardian, a new trend for unusual and crafty activities is emerging among women.

This means that instead of spending a small fortune on a drunken weekend abroad, ladies are able to save a few pennies to spend on other things, such as wedding insurance.

Personal assistant Baseera Green told the publication that she went to lindy hop lessons before hosting an afternoon tea party for her hen celebration.

"People get to know each other better when they're bonding over an activity and they're all still sober," she explained.

Ms Green is now organising a hen party for a friend and has decided to take the group to a craft workshop to make vintage-style fascinators.

Could Chelsea Clinton have a Jewish wedding?

Rumours are flying that Chelsea Clinton could be planning a Jewish celebration when she starts booking wedding venues and making plans.

Although her mother Hillary is a Methodist and her father - former president Bill Clinton - a Southern Baptist, Chelsea is marrying her Jewish fiance Marc Mezvinsky.

As a result, many reports claim that if the pair do go ahead and tie the knot in a summer celebration, it will be a Jewish occasion.

President of InterfaithFamily.com Ed Case said: "If they had a Jewish wedding officiated by a rabbi, I think that would be something really positive."

He added that it is important for the community "to have interfaith couples engaging in Jewish life".

At the moment, no details of the wedding planning have been officially announced by the Clinton family.

Another famous face who converted to Judaism to marry her loved one is Ivanka Trump.

She walked down the aisle with her partner Jared Kushner at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey last year.

Nicole Richie 'ready to start wedding planning'

Nicole Richie has revealed that although she has been "on the road", she is now ready to sit down and start her wedding planning.

The socialite recently announced her engagement to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden and discussed arrangements for her big day on Ellen DeGeneres' US chat show.

Richie explained that at the moment, nothing is set in stone.

"Not yet, but soon [we'll have a wedding date]. Yeah, it's a big deal," she stated.

The daughter of Lionel Richie also joked with the presenter about who would be receiving wedding invitations for the big event.

"You will definitely be there, obviously. Hello! Huge part of our life and relationship," she laughed.

The star is already a mother to Harlow Winter Kate, 18 months, and six-month-old Sparrow James Midnight.

She is not the only famous face making plans for her big day at the moment, as Jennifer Hudson's fiance David Otengo recently told Life & Style magazine that the couple have set a date.
