Many women 'dream of a gondola proposal in Venice'

Many women dream of the day their partner will get down on knee and pop the question.

To make the occasion even more memorable – and perhaps have something to talk about in their wedding speech - it seems as though many girls would like to be proposed to abroad, with Venice topping the list.

Research conducted by Sunshine.co.uk found that 86 per cent of women would like to be proposed to on a boat ride in the Italian city before booking with a wedding venue.

Unusually, only 19 per cent of women would like to be proposed to at the top of the Eiffel Tower, despite Paris traditionally being one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: "It's interesting to see that the Eiffel Tower is slipping in popularity with women when it comes to wedding proposals, as I think many men would class it as an ideal place to pop the question."

One celebrity who certainly made an impression when he proposed was comedian David Walliams. He gave girlfriend Lara Stone a ring hidden in a burger.
