More couples going to Greece to wed

More bride and grooms-to-be are venturing abroad to tie the knot, but one country that has seen a significant rise in interest is Greece.

According to the Greek National Tourism Office, next to the fact that the country offers good weather and 5,000 years of history, many couples are selecting their Greek wedding venue based on the hit movie Mamma Mia!.

Director of the UK and Ireland office of the organisation Sofia Panayiotaki told Essential Travel: "This year, there has been an increase on the Sporades islands, which is Skopelos, Skiathos and Alonisos."

While planning to wed abroad could ultimately prove cheaper for the bride and groom, the same might not be the case for those receiving wedding invitations.

Meanwhile, recent figures released by Halifax revealed that wedding guests are likely to spend an average of £624.10 at a ceremony and reception in the UK.

Those expenses are believed to cover everything from clothes, travel, accommodation and reception drinks.
