From holiday romance to marriage in Blackpool

Blackpool's reputation as northern England's answer to Las Vegas could be further enhanced by the addition of a new wedding venue.

Plans to regenerate the promenade of the famous seaside resort include the building of a new venue for civil ceremonies close to Blackpool Tower.

ReBlackpool, the body responsible for regeneration projects in the Lancashire town, is backing the £2.7 million wedding venue and work could get underway as early as autumn 2009 if a planning application is successful.

Doug Garrett, ReBlackpool's chief executive, predicted the project would bring "more fun" to Blackpool.

"Many marriages will have started with a holiday romance in Blackpool so we're continuing that tradition in a very modern setting," said Mr Garrett.

The first ceremony at the new facility is unlikely to take place until early 2011.

Pershore in Worcestershire also has a new wedding venue after The Wyre Mill Club, which is housed in a 198-year-old mill, hosted its first reception.

The club's future was under threat when the building was badly damaged by flooding two years ago, but it has now been restored to its former glory, reports Berrow's Worcester Journal.
