Fewer couples 'getting into wedding debt'

Fewer brides and grooms-to-be are getting themselves into debt for their wedding.

At least that is what personal loans company Thelendingwizard.com has claimed, after it revealed that more and more couples are putting off their wedding planning this year in a bid to cope with costs during the recession.

As such, they are not feeling the need to seek out a loan to fund the big day.

Data compiled by the organisation showed that applications for personal loans to help couples pay for the perfect wedding dress or reception dropped by 11 per cent this year compared with the same period in 2008.

"It is not completely surprising to see that couples are delaying their big day due to the current financial climate," commented the company's managing director Olivier Beau Lomenie.

He added: "This year's wedding season may be a little quieter than in years gone by."

Tradition has it that newlyweds should not begin their marriage in financial debt - apart from their mortgage - so refraining from taking out a loan to fund the big day could be a wise idea.
