Newlyweds will need new ID cards

After all the enjoyment of wedding planning, brides will soon have to fork out £30 to get their names changed on ID cards when they are finally rolled out, it has been reported.

Plans have been revealed that newlyweds could face fines of up to £1,000 if they do not inform officials that a surname on an ID card needs to be changed, according to the Telegraph.

The move has been criticised by opposition leaders who say it is a disappointing extra charge on couples recently back from honeymoons, who are already struggling with the economic downturn.

Shadow home secretary, Dominic Grieve, told the newspaper: "At a time of economic hardship, the public will be dismayed that the government plans to fine innocent people for inaccuracies on the government's own database, using summary powers vested in the Home Secretary."

The government, however, argues that it is important that they are informed about name changes so their database remains current.

Newlyweds also look set to have to splash £75 to get a surname on their passports amended.
